The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled the nomination period for candidates in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to 13, marking a significant milestone in the political calendar. Subsequently, the balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper is set for September 23, 2024, followed by parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024.

As part of its program of activities for the 2024 general election, the EC plans to conduct a voters’ registration exercise from May 7 to May 27, 2024, and a nationwide exercise to replace missing voter ID cards from May 30, 2024. Preceding the registration exercise, there will be 56 days of public education from April 1 to May 26, 2024.

The provisional voters’ register will be submitted to political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, with an exhibition of the voters’ register scheduled between July 15 and 24, 2024. The final voter register is expected to be submitted to political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.

Throughout the process, the EC plans to engage stakeholders outside the political parties’ framework and conduct public engagement through its “Let The Citizen Know” series to ensure transparency and understanding among all involved parties.

Special Voting for selected professionals, including security agencies and accredited media practitioners, is scheduled for December 2, five days before the main polls. While these dates are subject to review, the EC intends to declare the presidential results within a maximum of three days, maintaining Regional Collation Centres for announcing results at the regional level.
