The Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) will host Ghana’s Parliament today, Monday, December 16, 2024, marking its first sitting since the landmark December 7 general elections that reshaped the nation’s political landscape.

The Speaker’s Office confirmed the venue in an official circular issued on December 11, 2024. Earlier, Speaker Alban Bagbin had called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to resume their duties in a notice dated December 2, emphasizing the significance of this session in light of recent political developments.

The December 7 elections brought a seismic shift in Ghana’s parliamentary dynamics, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing a majority in Parliament. This outcome dealt a blow to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which saw prominent members, including Andy Appiah-Kubi, Henry Quartey, K.T. Hammond, and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, lose their seats.

The NDC’s parliamentary majority now grants it significant leverage over legislative decisions, reflecting the party’s broader electoral success. In the presidential race, John Dramani Mahama reclaimed the presidency, defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP in a decisive victory.

Before the elections, the Majority Caucus, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had urged Speaker Bagbin to convene a parliamentary session to address pressing legislative matters. However, the Speaker declined, maintaining that parliamentary activities should be suspended until after the polls, a decision that sparked debate among MPs regarding its timing and implications for governance.

Today’s session is expected to address critical post-election issues, including preparations for the transition to the new administration and discussions on the legislative agenda of the incoming government.
