Accra High Court Charges 20-Year-Old Interior Decorator with Murder Over Death of British National

20yr and 74 year old man

The case involving Pearl Agbomadzi, a 20-year-old interior decorator, and the death of 74-year-old British national John Scott Hughes has returned to public attention following a High Court update in May 2026.

Background to the Incident

On August 2, 2024, at Philipo’s Movie House. According to the prosecution, Hughes had invited Agbomadzi—described as his girlfriend—to meet him at American House before they proceeded to the movie house, where they rented Room 7.

After watching an explicit film, the two reportedly engaged in consensual intimacy. During the encounter, Hughes suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed.

Agbomadzi is said to have rushed to the reception area in distress to seek help. Hughes was subsequently transported to Legon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Health Considerations

Court documents indicate that Hughes had been taking Bendroflumethiazide, a drug used to treat high blood pressure, at the time of the incident.

Legal Developments

Despite the reported consensual nature of the encounter, the Accra High Court has charged Agbomadzi with murder.

The case was initiated following a complaint filed by the deceased’s wife. Agbomadzi was previously granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with one surety.

Presiding judge Lydia Osei Marfo also made a notable remark during proceedings, cautioning older men to be mindful of potential health risks and personal choices when engaging in relationships with significantly younger partners.

Public Reaction and Debate

The decision to pursue a murder charge in a case described as a consensual encounter has sparked widespread public debate. Legal observers and members of the public have raised questions about the appropriateness of the charge given the circumstances, with discussions focusing on issues of liability, medical factors, and the boundaries of criminal responsibility.
