More than 24 buildings have collapsed following severe flooding that swept through parts of Samreboi and Asankragwa in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region, leaving dozens of residents displaced and causing extensive property damage.
The flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall that caused the Samre and Tano rivers to overflow their banks, inundating several low-lying communities and disrupting the lives of residents. Homes, personal belongings, and sources of livelihood were destroyed as floodwaters surged through affected areas.
According to the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Elvis Koffie, the scale of destruction is significant, although no fatalities have been recorded. He noted that emergency response teams have been working around the clock to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected families.
Authorities have since relocated displaced residents to safer locations while relief efforts continue. NADMO officials say temporary shelter has been arranged for affected families as the organization collaborates with local authorities and other stakeholders to provide humanitarian support.
The disaster has renewed concerns about the recurring flooding that affects communities along the Samre and Tano river basins during the rainy season. Residents have called on government agencies to implement long-term flood mitigation measures, including improved drainage systems and river management projects, to prevent future devastation.
Meanwhile, NADMO has intensified monitoring of the affected areas and is conducting further assessments to determine the full extent of the losses. The agency has also appealed for support to assist victims who have lost homes and valuable possessions as a result of the floods.
As recovery efforts continue, affected residents are urging authorities to provide immediate relief items, including food, bedding, and building materials, while pursuing lasting solutions to the persistent flooding challenges facing the municipality.
