A heavy downpour that began around 4:00 a.m. on Monday has caused widespread flooding in the Kaneshie area of Accra, bringing traffic to a near standstill and leaving thousands of commuters stranded during the morning rush hour.

The persistent rainfall submerged several major roads and intersections, making them impassable and significantly disrupting the flow of traffic. Severe congestion has been reported along the Kaneshie–Circle–Accra highway and the Kaneshie–Odorkor stretch, where long queues of vehicles remained virtually stationary for hours.

Several motorists were forced to switch off their engines after becoming trapped in floodwaters, while others experienced vehicle breakdowns as water levels continued to rise. According to Metro TV’s Bernard Ralph Adams, floodwaters entered a number of vehicles, leaving drivers and passengers attempting to rescue personal belongings and assess the extent of the damage.

Commercial transport operators and commuters have been among the hardest hit, with many unable to reach their workplaces on time. Some passengers abandoned stranded vehicles and continued their journeys on foot, wading through ankle- to knee-deep water in search of alternative means of transport. Public transport services were also disrupted, as some commercial drivers suspended operations or diverted from affected routes due to safety concerns.

The flooding has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of low-lying communities in Kaneshie, an area that has experienced recurrent flooding during periods of intense rainfall. With more rain forecast, residents fear the situation could deteriorate if drainage systems become overwhelmed.

Motorists have been advised to avoid flooded roads where possible, exercise caution, and comply with directions from traffic officers managing congestion. Authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage and monitor drainage channels as weather conditions continue to develop.
