Dennis Miracles Aboagye has been arrested by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra, just hours after announcing his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The arrest took place on Sunday, July 12, 2026, and has since sparked strong reactions from the party’s leadership, who have questioned the circumstances surrounding the operation.
Arrest Linked to Ongoing Investigation
According to reports, Aboagye’s arrest is connected to an ongoing EOCO investigation into alleged corruption-related activities during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization (IMCC).
Sources indicate that EOCO officers, with assistance from personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service, intercepted him at Kotoka International Airport before taking him into custody.
As of the time of reporting, EOCO has not publicly disclosed further details regarding the specific allegations or any formal charges against Aboagye.
NPP Raises Concerns Over Detention
The New Patriotic Party has condemned the arrest, describing it as an act of political intimidation.
In a statement, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong confirmed that Aboagye had been taken into custody. He further alleged that the detained politician’s legal team had been denied access to their client and claimed that his whereabouts had not been disclosed by the authorities.
The party has called on EOCO to either grant Aboagye immediate access to legal representation and formally state the basis of his detention or release him without delay.
Political Tensions Rise
The arrest comes shortly after Aboagye declared his intention to contest for the NPP’s National Communications Director position, a development that has intensified political debate ahead of the party’s internal elections.
NPP officials argue that the timing of the arrest raises concerns about political interference and have urged the authorities to ensure due process is followed throughout the investigation.
EOCO has yet to issue an official statement responding to the allegations made by the NPP or provide additional details on the status of its investigation.
