How the Incident Happened
According to preliminary reports, a woman approached a trader who was selling goods at the market and offered to help by holding her eight-month-old baby while she completed a large purchase of groundnuts.
Believing the gesture to be genuine, the mother handed over the infant and continued gathering additional items for the transaction.
However, by the time she returned, the woman had allegedly disappeared with the baby.
The incident sparked panic in the market, with traders and bystanders immediately searching the area before the matter was reported to the police.
Suspect Reportedly Tried Similar Tactic Earlier
Reports indicate that the same woman may have attempted to use a similar strategy on another trader earlier that day.
The earlier attempt reportedly failed, raising suspicions that the suspect had deliberately targeted mothers with young children at the market.
Investigators are expected to review available information and speak with witnesses to determine the suspect’s movements before and after the alleged abduction.
Police Launch Investigation
The Ghana Police Service in the Volta Region has begun an active investigation into the case and is working to trace the whereabouts of both the suspect and the missing infant.
Authorities are urging anyone who was at the Kpando Market during the period between 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on July 16, or anyone with information that could assist the investigation, to contact the nearest police station immediately.
The investigation remains ongoing as police intensify efforts to reunite the child with his family and bring those responsible to justice.
