The United States has officially delivered another C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft to Botswana, further strengthening one of Africa’s most enduring security partnerships.
The aircraft was handed over on July 13, 2026, as part of ongoing defense cooperation between Washington and Gaborone, enhancing the Botswana Defense Force’s (BDF) airlift capabilities and supporting its role in regional peacekeeping, humanitarian missions, and national security.
Aircraft Supplied Through U.S. Defense Assistance Program
The latest aircraft was transferred under the U.S. Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program, an initiative managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) that provides surplus military equipment to trusted partner nations.
The EDA program is designed to bolster the defense capabilities of allied countries while promoting regional stability and strengthening long-term military cooperation.
Each C-130H Hercules aircraft transferred under the program is estimated to have a value ranging between $12 million and $30 million, depending on its configuration and condition.
Massive Maintenance Package Included
Alongside the aircraft, the United States supplied a comprehensive maintenance package containing approximately 12,000 spare parts to help ensure the long-term sustainability of Botswana’s growing Hercules fleet.
U.S. officials have also approved the future transfer of two additional C-130H Hercules aircraft, signaling continued investment in Botswana’s military aviation capabilities.
Boost to Botswana’s Defense Capabilities
The addition of the versatile military transport aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the operational readiness of the Botswana Defense Force across multiple mission areas.
The C-130H Hercules will strengthen Botswana’s ability to:

Botswana has successfully operated C-130 Hercules aircraft since 1997, using the fleet to support numerous missions under the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations (UN).
The Botswana Defense Force has earned recognition for its contributions to peacekeeping and regional security operations, with the Hercules fleet playing a critical role in transporting troops, humanitarian aid, and essential equipment across Africa.
Longstanding U.S.-Botswana Security Cooperation
The latest delivery marks the second C-130H Hercules aircraft Botswana has received from the United States in recent years, following a previous transfer completed in May 2024.
The allocation followed a series of high-level diplomatic and military engagements aimed at deepening bilateral defense ties, including a strategic visit by U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, Kelli L. Seybolt.
The continued aircraft transfers reflect the growing defense partnership between the two countries and underscore the United States’ commitment to supporting Botswana’s security, disaster response, and regional peacekeeping capabilities.
