A 32-year-old French language teacher has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after a Ghanaian court found him guilty of defiling a 12 Year old female student.
The Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court convicted Hondana Mensah after prosecutors presented evidence showing that he abused his position as a teacher and violated the trust placed in him by the student and her family.
Teacher Provided Private Lessons to Victim
The court heard that Mensah was the student’s regular school class teacher and had also been hired by the girl’s mother to provide private French language lessons.
According to the prosecution, the offence occurred on July 8, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. during a private tutoring session at the family’s residence in Combine, a suburb of Akosombo.
Mother Discovers Alleged Abuse
The matter came to public attention on July 11, 2026, when the student’s mother noticed a change in her daughter’s manner of walking.
After questioning the Class Six student, the girl disclosed the alleged assault, prompting the family to report the matter to the police.
Following an official complaint, police arrested Mensah on July 12, 2026.
Prosecutors Highlight Alleged Abuse of Trust
During the trial, prosecutors told the court that Mensah allegedly used his position as a teacher to intimidate the student and prevent her from speaking out.
The prosecution claimed that he threatened to intentionally fail her in French during her end-of-term examinations if she reported the incident to her parents or the authorities.
Prosecutors argued that the alleged threats were intended to silence the victim and protect Mensah from accountability.
Medical Evidence Presented in Court
After the complaint was made, the victim underwent a medical examination at a government hospital.
The medical report provided findings that were consistent with sexual assault and became a significant part of the evidence used by the prosecution.
Although Mensah denied the allegations in his initial caution statement to police, prosecutors successfully convinced the court that the evidence supported a conviction under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act.
Court Delivers Deterrent Sentence
In sentencing Mensah to 12 years imprisonment, presiding judge Kwasi Appiatse Abaidoo emphasized the need for strong action against child sexual abuse and the exploitation of authority by educators.
The court stated that the punishment was intended to serve as a public deterrent and send a clear warning to individuals who abuse positions of trust to harm students.
The case has renewed calls for stronger child protection measures in schools and communities, with authorities urging parents, educators, and institutions to remain vigilant in protecting children from abuse.
