Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, will face Ecuador, Uzbekistan and Papua New Guinea in the preliminary phase of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-Off Tournament.
The draw has handed Ghana three opponents from different confederations as the team continues its campaign to qualify for the global tournament in Brazil.
The Black Queens will begin against South American side Ecuador on Matchday One before meeting Uzbekistan on Matchday Two. Their final preliminary-phase fixture will be against Papua New Guinea.
The tournament is scheduled to take place at a centralized venue from November 24 to December 5, 2026.
Although the format resembles a league phase, it is not a conventional four-team group. Six participating countries will play three matches each based on fixtures predetermined by FIFA.
Ghana and South Africa represent Africa, while Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan qualified from Asia. Ecuador represents South America, with Papua New Guinea completing the preliminary-phase lineup as Oceania’s representative.
After all nine matches, the two best-performing teams in the overall standings will advance to the final phase.
Those two nations will join Venezuela, two qualifiers from Concacaf and one European team in the decisive stage, scheduled for the international window from February 23 to March 6, 2027.
The six final-phase teams will be placed into three separate pathways. Each pathway will be decided by a single knockout match, with the three winners securing the remaining places at the Women’s World Cup.
Ghana entered the inter-confederation play-offs after missing automatic qualification through the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Queens lost 2-1 to Malawi in the quarter-finals but recovered to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in a play-in match, securing one of Africa’s two positions in the intercontinental tournament.
The qualification campaign presents Ghana with an opportunity to end a 20-year absence from the Women’s World Cup. The Black Queens previously appeared at the tournament in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
Ecuador will offer a disciplined South American challenge, while Uzbekistan’s technical and physical qualities are expected to test Ghana’s midfield and defensive organization. Papua New Guinea will bring extensive experience from competitions within the Oceania region.
The Ghana Football Association and the technical team are expected to arrange international friendlies against opponents with similar playing styles as preparations intensify.
To reach Brazil, Ghana must finish among the top two teams in the preliminary standings and then win its single final-phase play-off match.
