President John Dramani Mahama has said the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination provide a more accurate assessment of candidates’ academic abilities following stricter measures against examination malpractice.
He made the remarks during a citizen engagement at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies in Wa. The event formed part of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.
President Mahama said strengthened invigilation and improved supervision during the examination significantly reduced opportunities for candidates to receive unauthorised assistance.
He alleged that, in previous years, some school administrators, headteachers and examination officials colluded to facilitate widespread cheating. According to him, the practice allowed some candidates to obtain grades they had not genuinely earned, concealing learning gaps before their transition to senior high school.
The President explained that the clampdown on malpractice had enabled the examination to present a clearer picture of candidates’ preparedness and foundational academic skills.
He said the results would also help the government and education authorities identify areas requiring greater attention and introduce targeted measures to improve teaching and learning.
According to President Mahama, candidates recorded improvements in major subjects, including Mathematics and English. Education authorities are also reviewing slight changes in performance in other subjects, such as Social Studies.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the integrity of Ghana’s examination system and ensuring that students progress through the education system based on their genuine academic performance.
