Cabinet has approved the appointment of a dedicated manager for the Borteyman Sports Complex to improve the facility’s daily operations, maintenance and coordination of international sporting events.
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, announced the decision amid growing public concern about the preservation of the multimillion-dollar facility and other national sporting assets.
Under the approved arrangement, a private company or professional facility manager will assume responsibility for maintaining the complex and ensuring that its infrastructure remains in good condition.
The manager will also be authorised to develop public-private partnerships to raise capital for the completion of outstanding infrastructure within the complex.
The decision follows reports of weed overgrowth, encroachment and inadequate maintenance around the $145.1 million facility, which was constructed as a major venue for the 2023 African Games hosted by Ghana in March 2024.
Government hopes that professional management will prevent the Borteyman complex from suffering the deterioration experienced at other major national venues, including the Accra and Baba Yara sports stadiums.
Beyond routine maintenance, the manager will help coordinate plans to transform the Borteyman enclave into a modern sports city capable of hosting major domestic and international competitions.
The proposed development includes a 50,000-capacity Olympic stadium, accommodation facilities for national teams, hotels, conference centres and a boxing arena.
The team accommodation is expected to reduce the cost of housing the Black Stars and other national teams during training camps and international assignments.
The Borteyman Sports Complex contains facilities for several sporting disciplines and remains one of Ghana’s most significant investments in modern sports infrastructure. The new management arrangement is expected to improve accountability, generate revenue and protect the facility over the long term.
