Nurse Killed as Health Team Responds to Ebola Alert in DR Congo

A nurse has been killed and another healthcare worker seriously injured in an attack on a medical team responding to an Ebola alert in Bafwasende, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s eastern Tshopo province.

The attack occurred on Saturday, October 24, when local youths reportedly targeted the responders amid false allegations that health workers were contaminating water sources and deliberately spreading the virus.

The team was carrying out a field response when the violence erupted, highlighting the dangers facing medical personnel working in communities where misinformation and distrust have undermined outbreak containment efforts.

The incident comes as the DRC battles an Ebola outbreak reported to have claimed more than 4,700 lives since May 2026, making it the country’s deadliest on record.

Resistance to response teams has complicated efforts to trace contacts, investigate suspected infections and provide treatment. False claims about the role of healthcare workers have added to the challenges of reaching affected communities.

World Health Organization officials condemned the killing and called for immediate action to protect medical personnel. The attack has heightened concerns about whether response teams can safely continue their work in areas where hostility toward health interventions persists.

Neighboring Uganda has also introduced tighter measures in response to the crisis, banning non-essential travel to and from the DRC and requiring returning citizens to undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine.

The violence in Bafwasende highlights the need to address community fears and misinformation alongside the medical response, while ensuring that healthcare workers can reach people who need assistance.
