The prosecution has closed its case against Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Akonta Mining Company Limited and another accused person in their trial over alleged illegal mining in the Tano-Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that the state concluded its presentation after calling three witnesses before the Accra High Court.
The witnesses comprised two former employees of Akonta Mining and a detective from the Ghana Police Service.
The former employees testified about what they described as Antwi-Boasiako’s involvement in directing the company’s mining activities within the forest reserve. Their testimony forms part of the prosecution’s allegations and remains subject to the court’s assessment.
The police detective presented evidence including drone footage, audio-visual materials and official communications relating to the alleged operations.
Defense lawyers have challenged the prosecution’s evidence and are seeking to recall the first prosecution witness for further cross-examination.
The court has given the defense until October 30, 2026, to file a formal application requesting the witness’s recall. Proceedings have been adjourned to November 4, 2026, for the application to be heard.
The closure of the prosecution’s case marks the end of the state’s presentation of evidence at this stage, rather than a conclusion of the trial. The court has yet to determine the allegations against the accused.
