The Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced two men to 20 years’ imprisonment each with hard labor after finding them guilty of a violent robbery involving gold ore valued at GH¢165,000.
The convicts, Justice Kakpo Mingle and Justice Mensah, were convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. A third alleged accomplice, identified as Festus Mensah, remains at large.
Attack at Denkyie
The robbery occurred on May 22, 2026, at Denkyie near Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region.
The victims, George Osei Tutu and another man identified only as Amoah, were targeted while in a pickup truck. Armed with a weapon described as a “shocker black gun” and a bayonet, the attackers overpowered the two men and took their gold ore.
The stolen ore was valued at GH¢165,000. The account provided did not indicate whether any of it was subsequently recovered.
Convictions and Sentences
Mingle, a 31-year-old photographer popularly known as “Nii,” and Mensah, a 29-year-old vulcanizer known as “Gaza,” were brought before the court over their involvement in the attack.
Presiding judge Isaac Appiatu found both men guilty on the two counts. Each convict received 20 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit robbery and another 20 years for robbery, with hard labor.
The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently. Both sentences will therefore be served at the same time, giving each man a total prison term of 20 years.
The two convicts are serving their sentences at the Kumasi Central Prison.
Third Alleged Accomplice Still at Large
Festus Mensah, also known as “Gucci,” was identified as the third alleged participant in the robbery but remains at large.
The judgment concerns Mingle and Mensah, whose involvement was determined by the court. No conviction has been reported against the alleged accomplice.
