Supreme Court Gives Police 10 Days to File Case in Chief Inspectors’ Promotion Dispute

The Supreme Court has given the Police Administration 10 days to file its statement of case in an appeal concerning the promotion of 40 Police Chief Inspectors.

The dispute arose from a special amnesty promotion exercise conducted in 2021 for officers who had obtained university degrees by 2020. The 40 Chief Inspectors were excluded from the exercise, while some junior officers benefited.

Court of Appeal Decision

On January 22, 2026, the Court of Appeal ordered the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Management Board to promote the affected officers within six months.

The Police Administration subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court. At an earlier sitting, the apex court granted a stay of execution, suspending implementation of the promotion order while the appeal proceeds.

The court reasoned that the promotions could be difficult to reverse if they were implemented and the Police Administration later won its appeal.

It also noted that if the officers ultimately succeed, they could still be promoted retroactively, even if they retire before the case is concluded.

The case remains before the Supreme Court as the Police Administration prepares to file its statement.
