The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, who hosts Onua TV’s, Morning Show.
Mr. Ofori-Atta claims during one of Captain Smart’s shows; he made false allegations stating the Finance Minister had taken a 10% share of the $3 billion bailout provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Ghana.
Captain Smart allegedly said, “Did you know Ken Ofori-Atta has taken 10% of the IMF money? For every loan we receive, he takes 10%.” According to the Finance Minister’s lawyers, these statements portray him as corrupt.
In the legal complaint, the Minister demands the recovery of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) as general damages, including aggravated and exemplary damages, for defamation resulting from the defamatory statement made by the defendant.
Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta seeks a permanent injunction to restrain Captain Smart, his servants, agents, or associates from making similar defamatory statements about him in the future.
Captain Smart must apologize and retract the false statement he made.
In other news, Captain’s request for a $3 billion bailout to support its recovery from its debt crisis has been approved. The approval has led to the immediate release of $600 million, marking the initial phase of the transaction between Ghana and the IMF.
