One of the victims of the recent military violence in Garu and Tempane in the Upper East Region has tragically passed away. Additionally, eight of the residents who were arrested and subsequently transferred to Accra have been released, with two of them still grappling with their health.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 29, 2023, saw over 50 people hospitalized after alleged violence by military personnel against Garu residents. It is believed that the military attack was carried out in retaliation for an attack on National Security operatives by a vigilante group in Garu.

Albert Alalzuulga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu, announced the unfortunate death of one of the victims and the release of the eight individuals who had been arrested. He expressed his deep disappointment with the military’s actions, deeming them unacceptable.

Alalzuulga emphasized the need for the government to address the situation, calling for compensation for the victims and indicating that legal action may be pursued. He also raised concerns that the treatment of the people of Garu was unfair and criticized the military for what he viewed as taking Ghanaians for granted, given that it is taxpayers’ money that funds their uniforms, vehicles, and weapons.
