The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially closed down Bawku FM, Source FM, Zahra FM, and Guma FM in the Upper East Region, citing national security concerns.

As outlined in a statement released on February 24, 2024, and made available to Metro TV, the decision to shut down these four FM stations stems from the recommendation of the Upper East Regional Security Council. This recommendation, made on the advice of the Ministry of National Security, asserts that the operations of these radio stations and the inflammatory statements made by their panelists have played a role in exacerbating the Bawku conflict, resulting in the loss of lives and property in Bawku and its surroundings.

Consequently, the NCA has invoked its authority under section 13 (1) (e) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008 (Act 775). This section empowers the authority to suspend or revoke licenses or frequency authorizations when deemed necessary for national security or in the public interest.

The NCA has affirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to fulfill its mandate as defined by law. It emphasizes the importance of all stakeholders adhering to the principles and regulations governing the communication industry.
