Starting from November 1, 2023, members of the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association will stage a three-day shop closure in protest against the government’s new tax compliance system. The association has expressed its displeasure with the government’s decision to implement a compliance task force responsible for monitoring tax compliance within their industry. They argue that these tax compliance measures have adverse effects on their businesses and livelihoods.
During a press conference on October 2, 2023, members of the association voiced their dissatisfaction with both the government and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for not heeding their appeals to reconsider the deployment of the compliance task force. They strongly opposed the compliance task force, deeming it as an intimidating tactic and a sign of disrespect towards their profession.
Mr. Takyi Addo, the association’s Head of Communications, clarified that their request is not for a suspension but for the complete elimination of the tax compliance policy, which they believe poses a threat to their trade and economic stability. He expressed optimism that the government would promptly intervene and address their concerns; otherwise, they would take further actions to safeguard their interests.
Mr. Addo concluded, stating, “The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association remains dedicated to engaging in peaceful protests to protect their businesses, underscoring the significance of their contributions to the economy and the well-being of their members.”
