Bobby Charlton, the iconic figure from Manchester United and a key contributor to England’s 1966 World Cup victory, has passed away at the age of 86.

During his illustrious career,

Charlton earned 106 caps for England and scored 49 international goals, setting records for his nation during his time. In his 17-year tenure with Manchester United’s first team, he secured three league titles, a European Cup, and an FA Cup.

In November 2020, it was revealed that Charlton had been diagnosed with dementia. He peacefully departed in the early hours of a Saturday morning, surrounded by his family. The family expressed their gratitude to those who provided care for him and to the numerous individuals who cherished and supported him, and they requested privacy during this time.

Manchester United paid a heartfelt tribute to Charlton, hailing him as “one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.” They emphasized his influence on football globally, not just in Manchester or the UK, and praised his sportsmanship, integrity, and exceptional football abilities.

His extraordinary achievements, character, and dedication will forever be engraved in the annals of Manchester United and English football, and his legacy will endure through the charitable efforts of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

With Charlton’s passing, Sir Geoff Hurst, who netted a hat-trick in England’s 1966 final victory over West Germany, stands as the only surviving member of that historic team. Hurst conveyed his sorrow on social media, noting that Charlton was one of the true greats who would be remembered by all of football, and he extended condolences to the family and friends of the departed legend.

It’s worth mentioning that Charlton’s older brother, Jack, who passed away in July 2020, and fellow World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who died in October 2020, had also been diagnosed with dementia.
