Ghana and the United Kingdom are exploring new opportunities to strengthen bilateral trade, following a high-level meeting between Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Trade, Agribusiness & Industry, Sampson Ahi, and UK Trade Commissioner for Africa, John Humphrey.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the UK-Ghana Investment Forum in Accra, focused on enhancing trade cooperation, attracting investment, and addressing structural barriers to commerce between the two countries.
A key agenda item was Ghana’s call for UK support in addressing import restrictions and improving access to UK markets. Deputy Minister Ahi highlighted Ghana’s commitment to deepening ties with the UK.
“We cherish our partnership with the UK and believe that with the right support, we can take our trade relations to the next level,” he said.
One major development discussed was the ongoing review of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, which aims to improve the investment climate and attract more UK businesses to operate in Ghana. According to Ahi, the revised Act will reduce regulatory hurdles and encourage foreign participation in key sectors.
Commissioner Humphrey expressed the UK’s readiness to support Ghana’s economic ambitions and highlighted the potential for increased collaboration.
“We believe that Ghana has immense potential for growth, and we’re excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our businesses to work together,” he said.
The two parties also discussed infrastructure development, acknowledging its critical role in supporting trade and investment. Ghana is working to improve its infrastructure to facilitate smoother commercial activities and overall economic growth.
In addition, agribusiness was identified as a strategic sector for collaboration. Both sides agreed on the importance of adding value to raw materials through processing, packaging, and marketing. Ghana is keen to integrate agribusiness into its broader industrialisation agenda under the Feed the Industry programme.
“We aim to empower farmers and agripreneurs to earn better incomes and supply raw materials for local industries,” Sampson Ahi noted.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to enhancing economic cooperation and building a stronger, more resilient trade relationship.
