Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has said large-scale job creation for young people must be central to Ghana’s “New Economy” agenda as the country seeks to turn economic stability into broader prosperity.
In remarks shared on October 8, 2026, following discussions at the University for Development Studies’ Nyankpala Campus, he stressed that the next phase of development must expand access to meaningful employment.
“The NEW ECONOMY must create jobs at scale: decent, productive jobs that give young people a real stake in Ghana’s future,” he stated.
The engagement brought together academics, researchers and students to discuss how economic policy could better respond to young people’s aspirations.
Dr. Forson said the discussions reinforced the need to support enterprise, improve productivity and create opportunities for young Ghanaians to participate fully in national growth.
The broader agenda includes support for small and medium-sized enterprises, local businesses and informal-sector operators, alongside efforts to strengthen domestic production and consumption.
The university consultations form part of wider stakeholder engagements on the proposed economic direction. Following the UDS session, the University of Ghana is expected to host the next discussion.
The process also follows consultations with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress, bringing workers’ concerns into deliberations on the country’s economic transition.
Dr. Forson maintained that the initiative must translate policy ambitions into practical opportunities, with employment and shared prosperity at the center of Ghana’s development priorities.
