Ghana is currently experiencing a seasonal influenza outbreak, with confirmed cases of both H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes of the Influenza A virus detected in multiple regions.

Health authorities report that the Central and Eastern Regions are battling outbreaks of the H1N1 strain, while the Greater Accra Region has recorded 42 confirmed cases of the H3N2 subtype.

According to health experts, the outbreak coincides with the country’s annual flu season, which usually peaks during the colder months. The influenza virus spreads easily in crowded environments, mainly through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking.

“Some regions are reporting H1N1 cases — currently, the Central and Eastern Regions are affected,” said Christiana Kudornu Achempem, Regional Disease Control Surveillance Officer. “In Greater Accra, we haven’t recorded any school outbreaks, but we have confirmed 42 H3N2 cases through routine sampling at our sentinel sites.”

The confirmed H3N2 cases in Greater Accra were identified in Ayawaso East and Okaikoi North, where samples were tested at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. So far, no H1N1 infections have been detected in the region.
