After footage surfaced of the Dalai Lama kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to “suck my tongue,” the Buddhist spiritual leader’s office released a statement apologizing to the boy and his family for any hurt the incident may have caused. He often teases people innocently and playfully, but regrets this incident.
In the video, the Dalai Lama invites a young boy on stage who had requested a hug at an event on February 28th. After kissing the boy on the cheek, the Dalai Lama then kissed him on the lips and asked him to “suck my tongue.” The Dalai Lama’s office clarified that sticking out one’s tongue is a greeting in his native Tibet.
The statement also referenced a previous controversy in 2019 when the Dalai Lama apologized for saying that if his successor were a woman, she should be more attractive. The 14th Dalai Lama was born in Tibet and has been living in India as a refugee since 1959 after fleeing his home country following a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
