The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (CDAG) and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have endorsed the newly introduced GH¢1 fuel levy, calling it a necessary sacrifice for the country’s long-term development.
In a statement signed by CDAG National Secretary Mohammed Aminu Usif, the unions acknowledged the short-term burden on drivers but expressed confidence that the levy could lead to significant improvements in road infrastructure—if managed transparently.
They urged the government to channel the levy directly into visible improvements, particularly the repair of faulty streetlights on major highways, especially in regional capitals where poor lighting continues to endanger lives.
“Improved street lighting is essential for visibility, reducing accidents, and ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers—especially at night,” the statement emphasized.
The associations also commended the government for repairing the Pokuase-Nsawam stretch, a critical route serving thousands of commuters daily.
CDAG reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members and safer roads nationwide, calling on authorities to manage the levy openly and ensure it benefits both the transport and energy sectors.
