The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has strongly defended President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, describing him as a leader unafraid of taking on difficult challenges.
In a Facebook post responding to an upcoming JoyNews investigative documentary on the government’s anti-galamsey campaign, Mr. Tameklo commended President Mahama’s leadership, describing his actions as “courageous and impactful.” “Dear JoyNews, President John Dramani Mahama does not run away from problems. He will solve this problem,” Tameklo wrote.
Highlighting progress made in the past nine months, he outlined key interventions under the President’s leadership, including the destruction of over 400 chamfang machines, the seizure of more than 500 excavators, and the confiscation of over 1,000 water pumping machines.
According to Mr. Tameklo, these efforts reflect a deliberate and results-oriented strategy to curb illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural environment. He questioned whether critics had been fair in assessing the government’s progress. “Is nine months enough time to rebuke the President? Can we honestly say the situation would have been better or worse without these bold actions?” he asked, noting that the interventions have helped prevent further damage to Ghana’s rivers and water bodies.
Mr. Tameklo also cautioned against what he described as attempts to “rubbish” the administration’s progress through selective media narratives “Is there an attempt to rubbish the efforts of the President? What is the end game for this framing?” he queried.
While acknowledging the media’s crucial watchdog role, he urged journalists to pursue balanced and responsible reporting on national issues, particularly those concerning environmental protection and the fight against illegal mining.
