The Editor-in-chief of the Daily Searchlight, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, has initiated legal proceedings at the Supreme Court questioning the eligibility of former President John Dramani Mahama to run for re-election in the 2024 polls.
Mr. Kuranchie is seeking several declarations as part of his case. Firstly, he seeks a declaration that Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution clearly specifies a presidential term to be four years upon proper interpretation.
Secondly, he requests a declaration that Article 66 (1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution, when properly interpreted, state that a person seeking a second presidential term must currently hold the position of President.
Furthermore, Mr. Kuranchie seeks a declaration that Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution, when properly interpreted, disqualifies a former President of Ghana from running for President again.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, are included as defendants in the lawsuit.
Mr. Kuranchie wants the court to instruct the Speaker of Parliament to enforce Article 68 (2) of the 1992 Constitution. He also urges the court to prevent Mr. Mahama from pursuing his presidential ambitions.
Mr. Kuranchie prays for the court to direct Mr. Mahama to fully disclose to Parliament the duration of his engagement as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
