US-based Ghanaian Afro-spiritual musician Efiya Otiwaa has called for a public apology from Ampomaa, the Ashanti Region contestant in Ghana’s Most Beautiful, over the alleged unauthorised use of her song, “Nananom.”
Otiwaa said the contestant used the work without her permission. She also challenged its description as a traditional folk song, maintaining that “Nananom” is her contemporary composition.
Her complaint center’s on both permission and recognition of authorship. She argued that presenting the song as traditional material misrepresents its origins and fails to acknowledge her creative contribution.
The dispute raises wider questions about how contemporary African music rooted in cultural and spiritual traditions is credited when used in public performances.
Otiwaa is seeking a public apology to address the alleged unauthorised use and the characterization of her work. No response from Ampomaa or the pageant’s organizers was included in the information provided.
