Shatta Wale Urges Action Against Online Abuse Without Silencing Citizens

Shatta Wale

Dancehall musician Shatta Wale has called for a balanced approach to social media regulation, urging authorities to tackle cyberbullying and malicious attacks while protecting the public’s freedom to speak.

His remarks follow comments by John Dramani Mahama on online abuse, regulation and police intervention over alleged defamation on platforms such as TikTok.

Shatta Wale argued that social media plays an important role in giving ordinary citizens a platform to share opinions, question leadership and express their creativity. He also highlighted its value as a source of livelihood.

While supporting efforts to address targeted harassment and deliberate attacks on people’s reputations, the musician cautioned against measures that could suppress legitimate criticism.

He maintained that protecting individuals from online harm should go hand in hand with preserving the ability of citizens to participate openly in public debate.

His appeal was directed at policymakers and law enforcement agencies, whom he urged to distinguish between abusive conduct and the lawful expression of opinions.

The comments add an entertainment industry perspective to Ghana’s wider debate over digital conduct, accountability and freedom of expression. Politicians, musicians and legal commentators have weighed in on how to respond to harmful online behavior without restricting democratic participation.

For Shatta Wale, the priority is to make digital platforms safer while preserving the opportunities they offer for public discussion, creativity and income generation.
