Ghanaian musician and entertainer Sam Kwabena Safo Junior, popularly known as Showboy, has revealed that he dreamed of becoming President of Ghana while growing up.
Speaking on the Talk to Kula show, the 2Hype Gang CEO reflected on his upbringing in the Eastern Region, the politicians he admired and decisions he now regrets.
Showboy identified veteran politician Yaw Osafo-Maafo as a major influence during his childhood. He said Osafo-Maafo’s prominence in the region inspired him and made him someone he hoped to emulate.
He also discussed how his opinion of former President Jerry John Rawlings changed with age. Although he did not like Rawlings when he was younger, he said he later came to appreciate his political intelligence.
“JJ was really smart. He was just smarter than them,” he said.
Turning to his education, Showboy expressed regret over failing to make full use of the opportunities his family provided. He attended the Rev. John Teye Memorial Institute before studying science at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School in Legon. He later moved to the United States, where he attended Montgomery College.
Despite that educational foundation, the musician said his pursuit of music and the influence of his peers diverted him from his earlier ambitions.
He also acknowledged disregarding his father’s advice, describing some of his choices as missed opportunities to fulfil the potential he showed as a young student.
His reflections offered a personal account of how his childhood interest in political leadership gave way to a different path in entertainment.
