Tekno Defends ‘Olodo Uprising’, Says Entertainment Does Not Have to Be Intellectual

Afrobeats singer Tekno has defended the popularity of deliberately silly online content, arguing that audiences do not always need intellectual depth to find entertainment enjoyable.

Speaking during an interview with Yanga FM Lagos, the Pana hitmaker weighed in on the “Olodo Uprising,” a phrase used in discussions about the rise of creators whose appeal center’s on exaggerated behavior, absurdity and humor.

“Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect?” he said, suggesting that intellectual content no longer holds the same appeal for Nigerian audiences.

Tekno cited comedian and content creator Carter Efe as an example, explaining that he could spend hours watching his antics because they made him laugh.

He compared the appeal of today’s online entertainers with the comic characters portrayed by Nollywood veterans Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, and the late John Okafor, known as Mr Ibu. According to the singer, their exaggerated and seemingly foolish behavior was central to why viewers enjoyed watching them.

Tekno argued that this style of comedy is not new. The main change, he said, is that digital platforms now allow people to create similar entertainment from their homes and earn money from it.

His comments add to the debate over the value of content that prioritizes amusement over substance. While critics question the influence of such material on public conversation, Tekno’s position is that making people laugh is itself a valid purpose of entertainment.
