On March 22, 2023, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) announced the cancellation of the filling of embarkation and disembarkation forms for passengers traveling through Ghana’s airports and seaports. The cancellation is part of the government’s efforts to improve the way of doing business and reduce bureaucracy in the country.

The GIS has indicated that the decision to cancel the forms was to arrive after consultations with various stakeholders, including airlines, travel agents, and the business community. Canceling the forms will not affect the mandatory immigration and customs checks at the ports of entry and exit.

Passengers traveling to and from Ghana will no longer be required to fill out the embarkation and disembarkation forms previously used to collect information such as name, nationality, passport details, and travel itinerary. The forms were seen as an unnecessary bureaucratic hurdle by travelers, and their cancellation is expected to simplify and speed up the process of entering and leaving the country.

Many Ghanaian businesses have long called for measures to streamline procedures at the country’s ports and reduce bureaucracy. The move is expected to boost Ghana’s standing in international rankings of ease of business and attract destinations for foreign investors and tourists.

Canceling the embarkation and disembarkation forms is a positive step toward making Ghana a more attractive destination for business and tourism. It is also one of several recent government measures to improve the country’s business environment. Other current initiatives include:

  • The introduction of an online business registration system.
  • The simplification of tax procedures.
  • The establishment of a one-stop shop for business registration and licensing.

This move, along with other recent initiatives, will help drive economic growth and create new opportunities for the people of Ghana.
