Sam George, the lead sponsor of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, has issued a stern warning to the United States of America (USA) against interfering in Ghana’s efforts to pass the anti-LGBTQ bill. He noted the US had previously imposed sanctions on Uganda, and its sponsors of a similar bill, and he emphasized Ghana would retaliate by impeding US economic interests if they attempted similar actions.
Sam George complained about potential sanctions against Ghana’s Speaker and members of Parliament during a parliamentary debate on the bill, and Ghana will take action against US businesses. He argued that before the US takes on Ghana, it should impose prohibitions on some governors and agencies within their own country who have also restricted individuals’ freedom of choice.
Sam George highlighted the health complications associated with LGBTQ+ activities and justified the opposition to the bill in the interest of the Ghanaian people. He expressed confidence in the bill’s passage and supported his claims with biblical references. Legislators are debating a report recommending the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, and religious leaders have gathered in Parliament to observe the proceedings. The bill has gained renewed attention following US Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent visit to Ghana.
