The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has suspended its industrial action, which commenced on June 2, 2025. This decision comes after a productive meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health held on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
According to the Association’s leadership, the discussions created a pathway toward resolving outstanding issues regarding the implementation of their Collective Agreement, which was signed in May 2024.
In an online press conference, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum urged all nurses and midwives to return to their regular shift duties starting Saturday, June 14, 2025. “We assure our members that we remain committed to ensuring the full implementation of the Collective Agreement and will continue to advocate on your behalf,” they stated.
The leadership also expressed appreciation to the Chairman, Ranking Member, and members of the Parliamentary Health Committee for their timely intervention and for establishing a clear framework to guide the agreement’s implementation.
The industrial action had involved a phased approach, including the wearing of red bands, the withdrawal of Out Patient Department (OPD) and emergency services, and eventually a complete halt of nursing and midwifery services. These steps were taken to press for the enforcement of the Collective Agreement.
While reiterating their dedication to patient care, the Association emphasized the need for fair treatment of health professionals. “As nurses and midwives, we are committed to delivering essential healthcare services to the people of Ghana. However, we cannot be expected to care for others when the system fails to care for us,” Ofori-Ampofo noted.
Nurses and midwives are expected to resume normal duties on June 14, 2025, as the Association prepares for a follow-up meeting with stakeholders on June 26, 2025.
