The Global Mercy, described as the world’s largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship, has arrived at the Port of Tema to begin a 10-month humanitarian mission in partnership with the Government of Ghana.
Operated by the international faith-based charity Mercy Ships, the floating hospital will provide free specialized surgeries and dental services to patients from across the country.
The mission will also train Ghanaian healthcare professionals as part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s surgical, anesthesia and medical-support systems.
Volunteer medical teams aboard the vessel expect to perform more than 2,500 surgeries and over 2,000 dental procedures during the ship’s stay.
Patients will receive treatment at no cost for a range of conditions that may otherwise be difficult or expensive to manage.
The planned procedures include the removal of maxillofacial and other tumors, cleft lip and palate repair, cataract surgery, pediatric orthopaedical correction and reconstructive plastic surgery.
Medical teams will also perform obstetric fistula repairs and selected general and pediatric surgical procedures.
Patients from different parts of Ghana have been invited to apply for treatment through the national registration and screening process. Those selected will undergo medical assessments to determine whether they are suitable for surgery aboard the vessel.
Preoperative preparation and postoperative monitoring will form part of the program to ensure that patients receive appropriate support before returning to their communities.
Beyond direct treatment, Mercy Ships plans to educate and train as many as 250 Ghanaian medical professionals.
The training program will involve doctors, nurses, anesthesia providers, dental professionals, biomedical technicians and other workers within the surgical-care system.
Clinical mentoring, simulation exercises and supervised placements aboard the ship will allow participating professionals to improve their practical skills while working alongside experienced international volunteers.
Postgraduate trainees from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives are also expected to undertake placements aboard the vessel.
The capacity-building component is intended to ensure that the mission’s impact continues after the Global Mercy leaves Ghana.
The visit marks Mercy Ships’ fifth field service in Ghana and its first return to the country in 19 years. The organization began working with Ghana in 1991.
Since then, Mercy Ships says it has delivered more than 2,670 surgical procedures and over 18,120 dental treatments in the country. It has also trained more than 2,920 healthcare professionals.
The latest mission supports Ghana’s National Surgical, Obstetric and Anesthesia Plan, which aims to improve access to safe and affordable surgical care throughout the country.
The plan seeks to incorporate essential surgery, obstetric care and anesthesia into Ghana’s broader universal health coverage agenda, particularly at regional and district health facilities.
Health authorities believe the partnership will help reduce surgical backlogs while strengthening services for maternal health, childhood conditions, trauma and emergency care.
The vessel’s international volunteer crew includes surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, dentists, engineers, teachers and maritime professionals from more than 70 countries.
Mercy Ships Country Director for Ghana, Michael Nkeze, described the organization’s return as a continuation of a long-standing partnership focused on providing immediate treatment while improving Ghana’s healthcare system for future generations.
The mission combines humanitarian treatment with workforce development, offering direct assistance to patients while transferring knowledge and technical expertise to local professionals.
