Nurse Assists Mother and Newborn After Unexpected Delivery in Bush

Rural nurse delivers baby in emergency situation

A community health nurse, Ms. Ali, provided emergency care to a mother and her newborn after an unexpected delivery in the bush, helping ensure their safe transfer to a nearby clinic.

The mother, Madam Alobase, had been preparing to visit a healthcare facility when she went into the bush to relieve herself and bathe. She gave birth before she could reach the clinic.

When Ms. Ali arrived, she found the mother seated in front of an elderly woman who was holding the baby on her lap. The newborn’s umbilical cord remained attached, and the placenta had not yet been delivered.

The nurse wrapped the baby in a cloth to provide warmth before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord.

Working in the outdoor setting, Ms. Ali administered oxytocin she had brought with her and spread a cloth on the grass. With assistance from bystanders, she then helped the mother deliver the placenta.

After cleaning and stabilizing the mother and baby, the nurse worked with the family to arrange transport to a nearby clinic.

A midwife took over their care upon arrival, and the newborn was assessed to be in good health.

The incident highlights the role community health nurses play in responding to emergencies when mothers are unable to reach a healthcare facility before giving birth.
