Six businesses, including three hotels, were apprehended by the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Enforcement and Tax Compliance Team for failing to provide Value Added Tax (VAT) invoices.
During the operation, conducted jointly by the GRA and the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, officials from three hotels and three local retail establishments were arrested while attending to customers.
The GRA became aware of the illicit activities of these businesses after obtaining evidence that they were issuing their invoices instead of official VAT invoices. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts by the authority to generate revenue for the state.
Joseph Annan, the GRA Accra Central Enforcement Manager, stated that the responsible individuals, namely the owners or managers of these businesses, have been apprehended. They will be taken to the offices of the Criminal Investigations Department, where their statements will be recorded.
Subsequently, they will be brought to the GRA office, where pre-emptive assessments will be conducted. Immediate payments will be required, and a comprehensive audit will be recommended.
Mr. Annan emphasized that this operation has contributed to increased compliance. He advised businesses to issue VAT invoices provided by the Commissioner General, as this would facilitate the state in mobilizing sufficient revenue for various government projects.
