Israeli PM Netanyahu announced the opening of Chad’s embassy in Israel on Thursday

Because of the visit of then-President Idriss Deby to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2018, Israel and Chad reestablished ties.

According to the Israeli Prime Minister’s office, Chad will inaugurate its embassy in Israel on Thursday, building upon bilateral relations established five years ago.

President Mahamat Deby is on a 48-hour state visit to Israel, according to his office on Wednesday.

The Chadian leader will officiate an inauguration ceremony for the embassy, according to Netanyahu’s office.

After the Organization of African Unity, which was the predecessor of the current African Union, decided in 1972 to cut diplomatic ties with Israel in solidarity with the Palestinian people, the Chadian government severed its relationship with Israel.

The late father of the current Chadian leader, Idriss Deby, paid a historic visit to Israel in November 2018. He spoke of a new era of cooperation between the two countries during this visit.

As part of a broader diplomatic push, the following year Israel signed normalization agreements with Morocco, Bahrain, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates,

A long-standing pan-Arab position calling for Israeli withdrawal from territories it occupies illegally and acceptance of Palestinian statehood in return for normal ties with Arab countries has been undermined by the agreements, which enraged Palestinians who condemned them as a “stab in the back.”

The location of the Chadian Embassy was not immediately clear. Tel Aviv is the home of most embassies of most countries.

A year after Trump announced he would move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2017, he did so. It infuriated the Palestinians and sparked international condemnation.

Former US presidents and nearly every other country have not opened embassies in Jerusalem until Israeli-Palestinian negotiations solve the city’s final status. A future Palestinian state will be based in occupied East Jerusalem.
