Argentinian forward Lionel Messi, who plays for Inter Miami, has been honored as Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year. Messi, who joined Miami in July, contributed significantly to their success in lifting the Leagues Cup, marking the club’s first-ever trophy. The 36-year-old, a recipient of the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in October, has made a remarkable impact on soccer in the United States since his arrival.

Time magazine recognized Messi for achieving what was once deemed impossible—transforming the U.S. into a soccer-centric nation through his presence at Inter Miami. The publication highlighted the increased attendance, elevated ticket prices, boosted merchandise sales, and enhanced viewership of Major League Soccer (MLS) games following Messi’s entry into the league.

Messi, previously associated with Barcelona, expressed his initial desire for an emotional return to his boyhood club. However, when that option did not materialize, he considered a move to the Saudi Pro League, which has attracted substantial foreign talent in recent seasons. Ultimately, Messi chose Miami over Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the appeal of both options.

In reflecting on his decision, Messi stated, “My first option was to return to Barcelona, but it was not possible. I tried to return, and it did not happen. It is also true that later I was thinking a lot about going to the Saudi league, where I know the country, and they have created a very powerful competition that can become an important league in the near future. It was Saudi Arabia or MLS, and both options seemed very interesting to me.”
