Fresh calls are emerging within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency for former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo to return and contest the seat for the party in the 2028 parliamentary election.
The renewed calls follow the circulation of a flyer on social media featuring a portrait of the former MP with the inscription “Sankofa”, accompanied by the words “Reclaim, Rebrand and Recapture.”
According to the sources, her supporters continue to regard her as a strong and articulate politician with a deep understanding of the constituency’s political dynamics.
The latest campaign comes despite Adwoa Safo previously stating that she had no plans to contest the Dome-Kwabenya seat again.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme several months ago, she reportedly indicated that she would not seek the NPP’s parliamentary nomination for the constituency again.
The renewed push has therefore raised questions about whether the former MP could reconsider her decision if pressure from party supporters intensifies ahead of the 2028 elections.
Adwoa Safo represented Dome-Kwabenya on the NPP ticket from 2012 until the party’s 2024 parliamentary primary, where she lost the nomination to Mike Oquaye Jnr, son of former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye.
At the NPP primary held on January 27, 2024, Mike Oquaye Jnr secured 1,194 votes, while Adwoa Safo polled 328 votes.
The outcome marked a significant shift in the political landscape of the constituency, where Adwoa Safo had established herself as a dominant political figure for more than a decade.
Mike Oquaye Jnr had previously come close to defeating Adwoa Safo in the constituency’s parliamentary election, losing to her by just eight votes.
His victory in the 2024 NPP primary consequently generated expectations that the party could reclaim the seat in the general election.
However, his return as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate did not translate into victory in the December 7, 2024 election.
He was defeated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, who subsequently won the seat for the NDC.
The defeat has since fuelled discussions within the NPP over how to regain control of Dome-Kwabenya in 2028.
For some party members, that strategy could involve bringing back Adwoa Safo, who previously held the constituency for several terms.
The “Sankofa” message on the flyer appears to reflect that sentiment, suggesting a return to a former political figure considered capable of helping the party reclaim the seat.
For now, however, there is no indication that Adwoa Safo has reversed her earlier decision not to contest the constituency again.
The renewed calls nevertheless suggest that her influence remains significant within Dome-Kwabenya, and her political future could become a major subject of discussion as the NPP begins preparations for the 2028 parliamentary elections.
