First-year students of the Presbyterian College of Education in Akropong-Akuapem have received practical fire safety training from personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The interactive session, organised by the Akropong Fire Station, took place at the E. K. Osei Hall as part of the college’s orientation program for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Officers introduced students to common fire hazards and preventive measures applicable to campus and domestic settings. The discussions covered electrical safety, the handling of gas cylinders and flammable materials, and safe cooking practices.
Students were cautioned against overloading electrical sockets and leaving food unattended while cooking. The officers also warned against prank calls to emergency lines, explaining the importance of keeping those channels available for genuine emergencies.
The team outlined the responsibilities of the GNFS during emergencies and guided students through evacuation procedures to help them respond appropriately when a fire occurs.
A practical demonstration concluded the session, giving students an opportunity to observe how portable fire extinguishers are handled and used to tackle small fires.
Officers also demonstrated the use of wet jute sacks to smother controlled fires under supervision.
The training formed part of the GNFS’s wider public education campaign to strengthen fire prevention awareness in educational institutions and other public facilities across the country.
