Asantehene Calls for Financial Clearance to Boost KNUST Staffing

Asantehene

The Asantehene, Osei Tutu II, has renewed his call on the government of Ghana to grant financial clearance to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to enable the recruitment of additional staff.

As Chancellor of the university, he expressed concern over the growing strain on academic resources, noting that the institution is facing a critical understaffing situation driven by rising student enrollment. According to him, the imbalance between lecturers and students is becoming increasingly unsustainable and poses a risk to the quality of education.

He emphasized that without immediate intervention, the pressure on existing lecturers could undermine both teaching standards and research output. With student numbers continuing to grow, he described the recruitment of qualified lecturers, researchers, and administrative personnel as a necessity rather than an option.

The concerns raised by the Asantehene align with findings from a recent review conducted by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, which highlighted a widening staffing gap at the university and called for urgent action to address the issue.

During recent congregation ceremonies at KNUST, the Asantehene also addressed broader developments within the institution. He welcomed the government’s renewed commitment to completing the KNUST Teaching Hospital, including the release of significant funding for construction and equipment.

He further issued a strong warning against encroachment on university lands, describing them as protected assets intended for future generations and cautioning that any such actions would be met with decisive measures.

In addition, he acknowledged government plans to invest in new lecture theatres to support the university’s continued expansion, underscoring the need for infrastructure development to match the institution’s rapid growth.
