The government of Burkina Faso has adopted a decree declaring the establishment of the SN-BRAFASO brewery and beverage plant as an urgent public utility, a move designed to accelerate the project’s development by removing administrative bottlenecks and safeguarding critical infrastructure around the site.
Located in Silmissin within the commune of Komsilga, the project spans approximately eight hectares and includes provisions for a designated easement zone to support utility connections, protect surrounding infrastructure, and allow for future expansion. The initiative forms part of the country’s broader strategy to diversify its economy away from mining and toward manufacturing and agro-processing.
The revival of Société Nouvelle – Brasseries du Faso marks a significant step in Burkina Faso’s industrialization agenda. The brewery, which had remained largely inactive since 2008, is being repositioned as a key player in the country’s push for economic transformation and self-sufficiency.
Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 600,000 hectoliters of beverages annually, including beer, soft drinks, and fruit juices. A central feature of the project is its reliance on locally sourced raw materials such as maize, sorghum, and rice, reinforcing efforts to promote domestic value addition and reduce dependence on imports.
The economic impact of the project is projected to be substantial. It is expected to create around 200 permanent jobs and 100 temporary positions, while generating an estimated 20,000 indirect employment opportunities across the supply chain. The Burkinabè state holds a 70 percent ownership stake in the company, ensuring that revenues contribute directly to national development.
The project was officially inaugurated by Ibrahim Traoré on November 25, 2025, following a rehabilitation investment exceeding 17 billion CFA francs, equivalent to roughly $28 to $31 million.
