A demolition exercise by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) beneath the Asafo Overhead Bridge in Kumasi descended into violence on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, after residents and local youth clashed with members of the assembly’s taskforce during an operation to remove unauthorized structures.
The exercise, which forms part of the KMA’s ongoing flood prevention campaign, was disrupted as protesters resisted the demolition, leading to injuries and significant damage to assembly property.
Demolition Targeted Illegal Structures Along Waterways
The KMA taskforce, supported by military personnel, moved into the area behind the COCOBOD building near Adum and the Asafo Overpass to demolish structures allegedly erected along waterways.
According to the assembly, the exercise is intended to clear encroached drainage channels and facilitate the desilting of waterways in an effort to reduce flooding within the metropolis.
Residents Resist Demolition
Tensions flared shortly after the operation began as some residents and occupants of the affected structures confronted the taskforce, insisting they had not received adequate notice before the demolition.
The confrontation quickly escalated, with some protesters reportedly hurling stones and wielding clubs against the enforcement team.
The ensuing violence forced security personnel to intervene as the situation spiraled into chaos.
Officers Injured, Equipment Damaged
The clashes left at least three KMA officers injured.
The unrest also resulted in extensive damage to assembly property, including:
- A KMA excavator that was vandalized.
- A pickup truck that was completely destroyed.
- Additional damage to other vehicles and equipment used during the operation.
The destruction is expected to impose additional repair costs on the assembly.
Mayor Vows to Continue Exercise
Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi has reaffirmed the assembly’s commitment to the demolition exercise despite the violence.
He stated that the damaged equipment would be repaired and that the operation would continue, emphasizing that illegal structures obstructing waterways pose a significant risk to public safety and contribute to flooding.
The mayor stressed that the KMA remains determined to enforce planning regulations and carry out measures aimed at protecting lives and property.
Videos Capture Violent Confrontation
Several videos circulating on social media and news platforms captured dramatic scenes from the confrontation, showing protesters confronting the demolition team, damaged assembly vehicles, and security personnel attempting to restore order.
The footage has sparked widespread public discussion over the enforcement exercise, flood-control measures, and concerns raised by affected residents regarding prior notification and relocation.
