Experts Urge Girls to Speak Out Against Abuse

Child protection and human rights experts have urged girls to report abuse and challenge discrimination, while calling on institutions to provide safe reporting channels and effective support for those who seek help.

Speaking at a mentorship and empowerment summit, the panel encouraged participants to recognise their rights and seek assistance from trusted adults or appropriate authorities when facing harassment, violence or unfair treatment.

The event brought together activists, legal experts and other stakeholders to discuss the challenges confronting girls and young women, including gender-based violence and barriers to equal opportunities.

Speakers emphasized that girls should feel confident expressing their concerns and should not be discouraged from reporting violations. They also stressed the importance of ensuring that those who come forward receive protection and support.

Beyond abuse, the discussions addressed gender biases in schools, communities and workplaces. Participants were encouraged to challenge practices that limit their opportunities and to recognise the value of their contributions.

The panel also highlighted peer support, urging girls to look out for one another and help vulnerable friends access trusted sources of assistance. Such networks, speakers said, could help reduce isolation and create safer spaces for discussing difficult experiences.

The experts extended their appeal to governments, law enforcement agencies and school administrators, stressing that protecting children requires institutional action.

They called for stronger enforcement of child protection laws, timely investigations and prosecution of offenders. Accessible counselling and legal assistance were also identified as essential services for survivors.

Schools were urged to strengthen policies that address discrimination and promote safe, inclusive learning environments.

The summit’s message combined encouragement for girls to speak out with a demand that authorities listen, respond responsibly and ensure that seeking help does not expose them to further harm.
