The family of 14-year-old Daniel Boateng Mintah has called for a thorough police investigation into his death, which occurred just 12 days after he enrolled at Abomosu STEM Senior High School in the Eastern Region.
Daniel, who hoped to become a computer engineer, reported to school on September 18, 2026, and died on September 30.
His parents, David and Joyce Mintah, say they want answers about the circumstances surrounding his death, including the care he received and what they describe as conflicting explanations from the school.
Speaking from their home in Dawhenya, the parents said Daniel spoke with his mother on the morning of September 30 and appeared to be well.
Later that day, the family received a call informing them that he was unwell with suspected malaria. According to their account, they were asked to send GH¢50 through mobile money for an injection.
At about 3:10 p.m., another caller, who identified himself as the headmaster, urgently requested that they come to the school. The parents said they were subsequently directed to Kwabeng Hospital, where a doctor informed them that Daniel had been brought in dead.
The family says explanations about the events preceding his death have been inconsistent. In one account, they were told Daniel left an orientation session to urinate and did not return. Another account indicated that he had complained of symptoms attributed to malaria.
They also say they found medication they could not identify among his belongings and want investigators to establish what treatment, if any, he received before his death.
At the family’s request, Daniel’s body was transferred from Kwabeng Hospital to the Tafo mortuary on October 1. His father said observations he made during a visit on October 6 raised further concerns, which the family wants addressed through a formal medical examination.
The parents are seeking a clear account of when Daniel became ill, when medical assistance was sought and whether any delay contributed to his death. Those questions remain unresolved pending the investigation and post-mortem findings.
Meanwhile, the school’s Parent-Teacher Association has expressed sorrow over the death and appealed for calm as authorities examine the circumstances.
The family is awaiting a full post-mortem examination to establish the cause of Daniel’s death.
