A violent confrontation between residents of Darkokrom in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region and suspected illegal gold miners, popularly known as galamseyers, has left one person dead and several others injured.
The incident has heightened tensions in the community, with residents calling for swift intervention by security agencies to end illegal mining activities in the area.
Farmer Killed During Confrontation
The deceased has been identified as Edwine Atteh Djaba, a 34-year-old farmer.
According to reports from the community, Djaba was allegedly beaten to death during the clash between residents and the suspected illegal miners.
Several other residents also sustained serious injuries, including gunshot wounds, during the violence.
Among the injured is Samuel Nartay Dapaah, a 76-year-old resident, who is currently receiving medical treatment alongside other victims.
Community Blames Illegal Mining Activities
Community leaders say the violence followed months of growing frustration over the impact of illegal mining operations in Darkokrom.
Speaking on behalf of residents, community spokesperson Doku Peter alleged that a local illegal mining operator popularly known as “Hero” mobilized armed men who attacked residents during the confrontation.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and security agencies are expected to investigate the claims.
Residents Cite Environmental Destruction
Residents say illegal mining activities have caused extensive damage to their farmlands and the local environment.
According to the community, cocoa, plantain, and cassava farms have been destroyed by mining operations, depriving many families of their primary source of livelihood.
They also accuse the miners of polluting streams that serve as the community’s main source of drinking water, forcing residents to search for alternative water supplies.
In addition, community members say abandoned mining pits scattered across the area pose a serious danger, particularly to children and farmers.
Calls for Immediate Security Intervention
Following the deadly incident, grieving family members and community leaders have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and other national security agencies to intervene.
They are demanding a thorough investigation into the killing, the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, and the immediate closure of illegal mining sites operating within the community.
Residents also want authorities to restore law and order and take decisive action to protect lives, livelihoods, and the environment in the Atiwa East District.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the security and environmental consequences of illegal mining activities in several parts of Ghana, where communities continue to call for stronger enforcement against unlawful mining operations.
