Four Arrested After Galamsey Damages Abesua Bridge

Four, including two Unit Committee members arrested

Four people, including two Unit Committee members and two suspected illegal miners, have been arrested in connection with the destruction of a bridge at Abesua in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The bridge over the River Kukubu serves as an access route for several communities. Its collapse has disrupted travel to farms, markets and essential services.

The Atwima Mponua District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Issahak, said the two Unit Committee members are accused of accepting money from illegal miners in exchange for parcels of land around the bridge and along the river’s buffer zone.

According to the DCE, the two suspected miners implicated the committee members during preliminary investigations. All four suspects are in police custody as investigations continue.

Communities affected

The damaged bridge has affected residents of Abesua No. 1, Abesua No. 2, Nyamebekyere, Abrokyire and nearby communities that rely on the route to reach the main road.

Farmers have struggled to transport their produce to market centers, while residents have faced difficulties accessing healthcare and other services. Schoolchildren who depend on the route have also been affected, particularly when rainfall makes crossing the river dangerous.

Repairs underway

The Atwima Mponua District Assembly has begun emergency work to improve access following public concern and media reports about the damage.

Workers have drained water from the affected road and cleared the clogged bridge. The damaged section is also being reinforced with boulders and gravel to make it passable. The assembly is considering plans for a permanent reconstruction.

Issahak said those found responsible for facilitating illegal mining around the bridge would be held accountable. The suspects are expected to appear before a court as investigations proceed.

Editor’s note: The reported court date was omitted because “Monday, November 3, 2026” is inconsistent: November 3 falls on a Tuesday.
