A fuel tanker explosion near the Kpone Barrier on the Tema-Aflao Road has caused major disruption to traffic and triggered a large-scale emergency response after a tanker overturned and burst into flames on July 20, 2026.
The incident, which occurred along one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors, resulted in a massive fire outbreak that sent emergency crews rushing to the scene to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby communities and industrial facilities.
Tanker Overturns After Tire Burst
According to eyewitness accounts, the fuel tanker, with registration number GT 8261-23, reportedly lost control after its front tire burst, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Moments after the crash, the tanker exploded and was engulfed by intense flames, creating a dangerous situation for motorists, pedestrians, and residents within the surrounding area.
Thick smoke from the burning tanker could be seen from a distance as emergency authorities moved quickly to contain the situation.
Ghana National Fire Service Deploys Emergency Teams
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly by deploying six fire tenders to battle the inferno.
The emergency operation involved personnel and equipment from several stations, including:
- Free Zones Fire Station.
- Tema Industrial Area Fire Station.
- Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) Fire Team.
- Ashaiman Fire Station.
- Motorway Fire Station.
- Tema Regional Headquarters.
Firefighters worked to bring the flames under control and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby businesses, fuel-related facilities, and residential areas.
Fire Contained After Emergency Intervention
The GNFS confirmed that firefighters successfully contained the blaze by 1316 hours, limiting further damage and securing the immediate area.
Authorities praised the quick response of emergency teams, noting that the coordinated effort helped prevent a potentially larger disaster in the heavily industrialized Kpone-Tema corridor.
Casualty Situation Under Investigation
Initial reports from bystanders suggested that the tanker driver and his mate may have been trapped inside the vehicle following the crash.
However, authorities said the casualty situation was still being verified and that further updates would be provided after emergency teams completed their assessments.
Emergency responders secured the area while investigations into the cause of the accident continued.
Heavy Traffic and Road Diversions
The accident created significant traffic congestion along the Tema-Aflao Road, affecting motorists travelling in both directions.
